“Smart giving” is what GiveWell does best. Described as “a charity rating agency that makes recommendations to donors based on the expected impact,” GiveWell encouraged more than $17 million in donations last year.

Founded by Elie Hassenfeld and Holden Karnofsky, GiveWell is “radically transparent” and a proponent of effective altruism—doing as much moral good as possible and using objective criteria to explain what that good is.
